Annual Symposium – Midwest Microbiome Sympisium
2024: In 2023, the PAMS Microbiome Symposium morphed into the first “Midwest Microbiome Symposium” (MMS) hosted by our colleagues at The Ohio State University. In 2024, the MMS was hosted again at Purdue – a great success with 80+ student posters and 220+ attendees.
2022: After a two-year hiatus due to COVID, we got back in stride with another very successful PAMS Microbiome Symposium in the spring of 2022.
2019: The first PAMS Microbiome Symposium was held in May of 2019 at Purdue’s Beck Center. Over the course of two days, 230 attendees, representing Purdue and 18 other colleges and universities (from as far away as Colombia), as well as corporate entities, government researchers and NGO’s, came together to hear six world-renowned keynote speakers and a range of other talks. An evening poster session brought together roughly 50 presenters. Our corporate sponsors at this event had the opportunity to set up informational tables/booths for the duration of the program, market their products/services, and make numerous new connections within this community. Some video highlights from the 2019 Symposium are available below:
- Laramy Enders – “Exploiting microbiomes for management of crop pests: Lessons from aphids and their symbionts”
- Mohit Verma – “Engineering the gut microbiome using physical-organic chemistry”
- Steve Lindemann – “Bran fiber structure controls composition and metabolism of human gut microbiota”
- Seth Bordenstein – “What do a great pandemic and vector control have in common?”
- Vanessa Hale – “Characterizing the gut microbiota of farmed and wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in relation to Chronic Wasting Disease”
- Tim Johnson – “Agricultural antibiotic use alters the composition and function of the gut microbiome in turkeys”
